Everyone at NESSR would like to say a huge thank you to Danni and her family for giving Jasper a wonderful retirement home. Sadly earlier today he went to the bridge after a period of illness.

An Old Dog's Prayer

One by One, they pass by my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his time, he can't run and play.
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way

A little old man, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.

Now my muzzle is gray, and my eyes slowly fail.
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.

Whatever excuse they made in their head,
Can't justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The younger dogs get adopted away.

When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face, and I finally had hope.
You saw thru the gray, and the legs bent with age,
And felt I still had life beyond this cage.

You took me home, gave me food and a bed,
And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,
You love me so dearly, you want me to know.

I may have lived most of my life with another,
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
And I promise to return all the love I can give,
To you, my dear person, as long as I live.

I may be with you for a week, or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve.

And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the person who made my last days so dear.

Run Free Jasper you will be missed by so many.

Thank you Danni for the love you gave to this dear sweet gent.

At NESSR we try to help as many dogs as possible regardless of age or special need. Sadly in this throwaway society oldies are often turfed out of their homes because of changing circumstances or because they need expensive veterinary treatment and their owners can not afford it.

When an oldie comes to NESSR we don't want finances to be a barrier to them finding a forever fireside, therefore we assist with any age related veterinary treatment and also in the case of some dogs we pay for any pre-existing medication. This comes at a considerable cost to NESSR's already stretched funds. Some dogs cost us over £30 a month in medication.

In order to help create a fund to support these Oldies and those with special medical needs we have created a Sponsor an Oldie Scheme. People are asked to pledge a monthly amount from as little as £1, they then set up a standing order. In return they receive a bi-annual exclusive "Oldie Update" and also get to choose a "tag" for their forum signature. For UK taxpayers the monthly donation can be gift aided which will add even more to the Oldie's Fund.

On Saturday 17th May there will be an 8 mile sponsored walk along part of the Cotswold Way National Trail in Gloucestershire.

The walk is for families and their dogs and it is planned to stop at a pub along the way.

There will be some hills involved in the walk but it is along a well marked and well maintained national trail. The views from along the Cotswold escarpment across the Severn Vale and estuary to Wales are spectacular.

There will be camping available and on the saturday night there will be a BBQ.

Rescue Dog of the Week

Name: Max
Gender: Dog
Age: 3 yrs (4 in July)
Breed: Springer
Colour: L&W
Neutered: Yes
Vaccinated: Yes
Microchipped: TBC
Children: Unfortunately not
Cats: Hasn't show any inclination to chase the cats he is living with.
Other dogs: Yes
Description: Lovely dog but has a few issues, these are not serious but stem from a lack of socialisation when younger. His recall outside is good, most of the time. He pulls like a train but settles down and walks quite nicely after his initial excitement has worn off.
Type of Home Needed: As this lad suffers from serparation anxiety, we feel it would be better to rehome him with someone whos around for most of the day. He also needs someone whos willing to work through his minor issues, but with a little time love and patience he will make a fantastic dog.

If you are interested in this dog please call Cynthia 01670 760346 between 11am and 6pm, email cynthia@nessr.net or send her a PM via this forum

All NESSR dogs require new families to be homechecked, a vet reference and/or personal reference. In addition you will be required to sign an adoption form and give a donation so that we can continue our work.
